Cela fait plus de 30 ans que j’achète des méthodes de musique pour divers instruments et sans conteste celle ci est la meilleure que j'ai jamais eu. Tout ce qu'il faut pour jouer du funk y est, que ce soit les voicings d'accords sympas (et comment construire pour les 7/9/11 avec des formes mémorisables), le travail rythmique, alternance main gauche/main droite, les licks et même un chapitre sur la modulation wheel des synthes !Le tout est appliqué sur les différents types de claviers funk (Rhodes, Clavinet, Hammond, Mini Moog (pour les basses), Arp Odyssey (pour les leads), les nappes (pour synthés polyphoniques), et cerise sur le gâteau un chapitre avec exemples mixant synthe, Clavinet, Rhodes, piano, ...Le tout accompagne d'un CD, vraiment une grande réussite que ce livre de Gail Johnson !
Les ouvrages pour claviers dans le style du funk sont très rares!Donc ne serait-ce que pour cette raison funk keyboard de Gail Johnson est précieux!D'un point de vue pédagogique c'est tres intérêssant et tout autant d'un point de vue musical.Idéal pour découvrir le style (funk, groove jusqu'à l'ambiance de Jamiroquoi...).Intéréssant pour les pros également, une bonne source de progres et a posseder dans sa bibliothèque!!
Funk Keyboards est la methode à posseder. Tout les exercices necessaires y figurent. De plus les exemple proposés sont contemporains. Vraiment un tres bon choix pour les debutants et les intermédiaires.
J'ai été déçu par ce livre, qui me semble mal conçu. Les exemples donnés pour apprendre sont avec 6 bémols 5 dièses etc ... vraiment pas facile pour le débutant et ce n'est pas logique puisqu'au début c'est le contraire c'est trop facile. Du coup ça fait on y va pour quelque chose de simple puis quand on maitrise on passe à quelque chose d'impossible, donc du coup on arrête et on essaie de revendre ce bouquin inutile pour moi ...
I'm a classically trained pianist who has thrown herself into jazz and gotten pretty serious about it over the past year. I am now hooked on funk. I want to eat it for breakfast every morning. I got this book because I needed some ideas, know somewhat little and I'm a visual learner.I don't think this is meant to be the definitive book on funk keyboard because there really isn't a way you can "get it" by just reading about it and playing what is on the page. You've got to experience it, you can't just study it from a page. This book ended up being a lot more than what I thought it would be though. It is a really good tool to get your started and invaluable for all the information on recordings that you need to listen to. I've been listening to the recordings she suggested and transcribing all the piano solo stuff I like. It is a really great guide.So, don't expect this book to teach you absolutely everything you need to know. You'll never know everything anyway. You've got to immerse yourself in this world, but this book will point you in the right direction, give you some tools, slap your face off with some rhythmic concepts, give you some melodic and harmonic information, which is basically all a book about funk can really do. You've got to listen to the recordings she suggests and find some of your own favorites, practice practice practice, play along with recordings, and maybe get some lessons.For me, I couldn't have learned as much as I have and it is really valuable to me. It is also straight forward and to the point.Thanks, Gail. You kick ass.
I love this book. Gail Johnson has taken me from loving this style of music to being able to actually play it. She's just done a fantastic job of introducing and teaching funk keyboards.The book comes with a companion CD, which is very useful, as the notation is fairly complex, and I find it quite helpful to also hear the parts and play along with them. After a few repeats of each exercise, the recorded keyboard drops out, and if you're playing along and there's no apparent transition, you know you've nailed it.I will spend weeks digesting this, getting facile with it, learning it in various keys, and integrating it into my playing. The cost is miniscule compared to the value.If you love funk keyboards but haven't been able to work out how to play them just by listening or you don't know someone who can show you this stuff, this book is for you. I just wish I had had it 20 years ago.The only change I would request is for her to add extra audio tracks of the complete songs that go at maybe half speed. It's taking me quite a while even to learn a couple measures of the best stuff and bring it up to full speed. I'd like to be able to play along sooner, at a more manageable speed.
The best keyboard book bar none. My only complaint is that it is WAY TOO SHORT. Gives you a great intro into playing chords on your different keyboard types on today's Roland or Yamaha or Nord (i.e., Rhodes, B3, Clav, Wurly, etc.)and how to put together funk riffs but PLEASE add a second much more detailed instructional book! Take yesterday's funk grooves and really put them into a full-measure, multi-key book and you'll sell a tons of them!!! Thanks, Gail. Great job. Now whup up a morre detailed tome!!!
Nice stuff, it offers some patterns, chords progressions, nice funky stuff.
Gail Johnson is not only a good teacher but she is an inspiring person aswell. I have not met her and only know her music from this book, but I can say that the method is thorough, and the music is playable and it genuinely builds your technique and musicianship.She takes you from basic grooves to complete songs. All the while the music is sensible and meaningful, and allows you to grow your knowldege and technique.This is what good music instruction is about - presenting beautiful music with insight and inspiration. It's not easy to do outside of a music lesson, but she has pulled it off. Now how about a book 2, something with more funk studies, perhaps?
